Wow! Sorry about the tonight. Much has been happening. I’ll be taking a break from the HQOM for a few months. Take care everyone. We are officially on hiatus.
Sorry!
October 29th, 2011No Open Mic/Workshop tonight. :(
September 30th, 2011Hi All!
We’re very sorry to tell you that tonight’s HQOMW for September has been canceled–not a big deal in the long term–we just need to finalize a few things with our venue–but we kinda got signals crossed for September. My being sick didn’t help, either.
So! Please use this month to get things ready for October! It’s going to be a great night. Our feature for October will be Talia Bettcher!
Bring flashlights! My assignment to all of you is to think of a ghost or horror story for the reading, as well!
*hug*
Ryka
PS-try not to get this cold I’m fighting, ‘cuz it’s really a pain.
August Workshop and Open Mic@
August 25th, 2011More July News! Special Guest Hostess–OFELIA DEL CORAZON
July 26th, 2011July 29–Featuring JACK TANGLE
July 18th, 2011Jack Tangle’s roots reach back into the far west, from family homesteaders north of Calgary to the Gold Rush, ranching and logging areas of Northern California where he grew up. Many of his stories hearken back to personal experiences; some homocentric, others more varied, but always with a sense of the West.
“In addition to participating in local open mic including “Homocentric” at Stories Bookstore and The Western Music Association’s “Jam at the Autry” I have recently done my spoken stories in the 4-man show “Aces & Eights” at the Mc Cadden Theater and in Michael Kearn’s “Late Awakenings” at the Skylight Theater. I will be participating in the upcoming West Hollywood Bookfair.”
Plus–the usual workshop and readings and discussions with lgbt writers, performers, and artists that make the Hollywood Queer Workshop and Open Mic the hidden taco truck of the LA queer lit scene.
See you June 24!
May 29th, 2011Loading the Honda…
May 26th, 2011Sometimes, I am loading my Honda with mics and guitars and the occasional samurai sword and heels, and makeup–and I am just thinking–why on earth do I do this? And more importantly–is there a better way to do this?
Not everyone performs or wants to perform. Or write. Or play music. During those days when I am up at 4 am trying to get to the Raleigh airport, I can really understand not wanting the hassle. But I do it because that is what I do. I am a writer, and I want to perform and publish and develop and improve. The HQOM is for everyone who feels this way, who can’t live without a guitar, or a pen, or a stage. If you have ever stayed home to finish your poem or song while your friends went to the movies or to a bar, this is the place for you.
Here’s to better, more informed, connected and prepared queer artists!
Much love,
Ryka
